DOW University Graduates on Strike Demanding Fair Pay
The postgraduates of MDS (Masters in Dental Surgery) trainees of the DOW University of Health Sciences joined the peaceful protest with house offices to get the better working conditions and pay. The protests of the graduates entered in the 9th day but the relevant authorities did not give attention to their demands as the trainees and house officers demanded for fair payment of wages, which are owed to them.
Most Expensive Post Graduate Degrees
MDS in included in the most expensive degree program within the country as the annual fee of this degree is Rs.200,000. When you consider the rate of fee, the 5 year program costs as much as Rs.1,000,000 for the future dentists. When these graduates pass their exams, they get the meager Rs.20,000 allowance after spending long five years on these programs and this small amount is insufficient to meet their expenses or even provide the treatment to their any family member, it they fall ill.
According to the notification issued by the Sindh government, the payable amount for any postgraduate trainee is Rs.65,000 and the graduates are not getting the third of the allocated amount. They argue that the funds are not provided for the same.
Ignorance from first day
The authorities concerned are still ignoring the demands since the first day of the protest. The allowance is given to the students 8 months after their admission. The payment is also subjected to different deductions and they get the paltry of Rs.2,000 or Rs.3,000.
Most of the graduates do not get the full amount of Rs.20,000. The disbursement of the payments is highly irregular and the pay is being issued to them after 2 to 3 months. When the graduates personally visit the finance department every month, then they get the payments after asking for the allowance repeatedly.
None Takes Responsibility
When the trainees and house officers complain the finance department about the cuttings from their pay, and they get very small amount, they referred the graduates to other departments. Then they sent them to the different administrative departments and no one is ready to take the responsibility for discrepancies.
The regulations of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council states that MDS is equal to the FCPS II degree and the trainees of FCPS are given the complete rs.65,000 per month and the MDS trainees perform the same duties and they get only Rs.20,000.
Demand of Protest
The protesters demand that the monthly allowance should be enhanced to mandated amount and the fee of the graduates should be decreased for MDS program.
The protest of the graduates entered in the 9th day but the authorities did not comply with the demands of the protestors. Now the house officers and MDS post graduate doctors have come out with the joint plan of action as protest and strike continues to next week.
The graduates have given their own declaration that they do not belong to any political party and they are not against the administration of DUHS. They are protesting to get their rightful pay without unnecessary deduction, which is allocated by Sindh government and PM&DC.
The pay of the house office set by the government of Sindh and PM&DC is Rs.30,000/= and pay by the DOW University of Health Sciences is Rs.13,000/=. The pay of the postgraduate set by the government of Sindh and PM&DC is Rs.65,000/= and pay by the DOW University of Health Sciences is Rs.20,000/=.
